After checking a few spots, I ended up at Pastrami & Rye in Ponsonby, a modern New York-style deli that cures and smokes its own meats. The Reuben came loaded with house pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on toasted rye bread. Crispy, creamy, tangy, and hearty, it hit the spot, even if the pastrami tasted a little more like corned beef than smoky pastrami. From Belgian Chocolate Rum and Biscoff Custard to Lemon Lime Curd and Strawberry Jam, they have something for everyone, including vegan options and ice creams. But I had to try their famous crème brûlée doughnut. The top cracked perfectly like glass, the custard was creamy, and the dough was soft and fluffy. Pure indulgence. Middle Eastern Morning Auckland Review | Falafel Platter & Mango Drink Taste Test I checked out Middle Eastern Morning in Auckland after seeing that impressive 4.9-star Google rating. I ordered the Falafel Platter for $22 and a Mango Drink for $8. Unfortunately, the drink didn’t work for me, and the falafel, while crispy on the outside, was dense and lacked that authentic spice blend you’d expect. The hummus was chunky, the tahini was plain, and the pickles tasted straight from the jar. If you’re Middle Eastern, you might feel it’s not authentic, but if you’re just looking for a vegetarian option, it might be okay. Would you try it? Having had Cinnabon from Singapore, Egypt, and the Middle East, I wanted to see if New Zealand’s version could match the same magic. The bun was warm, soft, and fresh out of the oven, dripping with that signature icing and packed with cinnamon sugar. Chilean Flavours in Takapuna | El Origen Café Review 🇨🇱 Today I decided to go Chilean and stopped by this cosy café in Takapuna called El Origen. What made me pull over wasn’t just the food, it was the live music, the violinist, and the warm Latin vibe that filled the place. I ordered the Mechada Queso for $27 and a Coke Zero for $5. The sandwich came stamped with their name on top, packed with pulled beef and melted cheese, plus a big side of fries that had that old-school fish-and-chip crunch. The beef was a little dry at first, but once the cheese mixed in, it turned into pure flavour. Would I go back? Trying Real Swedish Food in Auckland | Scandibunz Milford 🇸🇪 Today I decided to try something completely new, Swedish food. Apart from IKEA meals, I’ve honestly never had proper Swedish food before, so when I found Scandibunz in Milford, I had to check it out. The place was warm, cosy, and smelled amazing. I went for their Tunnbröd wrap filled with Gravlax, creamy dill mustard vinaigrette, and soft potatoes. It was light, fresh, and bursting with flavour. Potato Top vs Classic Steak & Cheese | The Baker’s Cottage Pie Review 🥧 Today I finally ticked off a spot that’s been sitting on my pie list for ages, The Baker’s Cottage. I arrived around 1 pm, the place looked so inviting, and you can even peek through a small opening to see the bakers working away inside. I came for a classic steak and cheese, but it was sold out, so I went for the potato top version. At $8.30, it looked great, with a nice crust and a warm, satisfying filling, though not much chunky beef and just a touch of cheese. A decent pie overall, but not one that made me say wow. Fresh, Hot & Fluffy Greek Doughnuts in Auckland! Lukumades Review 🇬🇷 Today I visited Lukumades Newmarket, a new dessert café that just opened a few weeks ago. I’ve had Lukumades before in Singapore, but this Auckland branch has taken it up a notch! They serve Greek-style fusion doughnuts, cooked fresh to order so you get them piping hot, golden, and fluffy every time. I went for the half-and-half box ($17), which comes with ten doughnuts, and picked their bestsellers — Bueno Melted Hazelnut Sauce with Milk Chocolate and Biscuit, and Pistachio Spread with Shaved Dark Chocolate Flakes. The first bite was heavenly — crispy on the outside, soft and doughy inside, with chocolate that melts perfectly. The café also has such a fun, modern vibe, with swings for seats and a warm glow that makes it perfect for photos.
