If there is one thing I have learned while travelling through Kuala Lumpur, it is that this city takes its food seriously. And today, an Avid Traveller followed a simple craving that turned into a whole barbecue adventure. The journey led straight to Pitboy Barbecue, tucked inside Tapak Urban Street Dining, a place that feels alive the moment the lights come on.
Imagine this. A vast open carpark transformed into a full-blown foodie playground. Food trucks lining the edges, container kitchens glowing as the sun starts to set, a live band tuning up, and a whole community gathering in the middle. It feels like the kind of spot where something delicious is guaranteed to happen.
Arriving exactly at six was the best decision because by seven, the crowd was already flowing in fast. While looking through the menu, curiosity got the better of An Avid Traveller. He asked the owner if there was anything off menu, something special. The owner paused, smiled, and said, “Ye,” a pastrami sandwich with melted mozzarella. Not listed anywhere. Limited. Secret. And instantly irresistible.
While waiting, two fresh juices from nearby stalls kept the KL evening heat under control—one of watermelon, one of orange, both cold and refreshing. Then the buzzer went off, and the moment of truth arrived.
The sandwich was massive. Thick slices of smoky pastrami stacked high, creamy melted mozzarella stretching with every pull, soft toasted bread holding everything together, plus fries, coleslaw, and pickles on the side. One bite and everything blended perfectly. The smoke, the tenderness of the meat, the creaminess of the cheese. It was the kind of bite that makes your eyes close for a second without you even realising.
An Avid Traveller wanted to order more but was already too full. The funniest part was that a nearby pasta stall had an insane smell wafting through the air, teasing a return visit. So yes, Tapak is officially on the return list.
Pitboy BBQ is halal and easily one of the most incredible barbecue discoveries in KL: the vibe, the flavour, the off-menu surprises. Everything works beautifully here.
Would you try this off-menu pastrami sandwich, or should An Avid Traveller go back and hunt down more secret dishes for you?
