Manu is one of those places you could easily miss if you were not paying attention. It sits quietly along Hokianga Harbour Drive, right next to the GAS station. Small, simple, no noise, no hype. Just a cool little local café doing its thing.

☕ Our Experience at Manu

We ended up going twice, once on the 26th and again on the 27th. Same order both times, flat white and carrot cake. When a place gets it right the first time, there is no reason to change.

The staff were genuinely friendly. Not forced, not rushed. Relaxed, laid back, and very Northland. The kind of place where you feel comfortable the moment you walk in.

Now the coffee. This one surprised me. Smooth, well-balanced, not acidic at all. Exactly my style of coffee. Clean flavour, easy to drink, and consistently good across both visits.

🍰 Flat White and Carrot Cake

The flat white was solid and dependable. No bitterness, no sharp aftertaste. Just a smooth cup that you can actually enjoy without needing sugar.

The carrot cake was simple but satisfying. Moist, not overly sweet, and perfect alongside the coffee. Nothing fancy, but done right.

🌿 Why Manu Is Worth a Stop

If you are driving through Ōmāpere or exploring the Hokianga Harbour area, Manu is an easy stop that makes sense. Good coffee, friendly staff, relaxed vibe, and no pretence.

Sometimes that is all you want on a road trip.

I've thought very hard about this today and I've decided that aside from the cheesecake my Nan brought back from Cornwall over 40 years ago this was the best I've ever eaten. Sweet but savoury, proper digestive biscuit base (not coconut) and baked. Fruit on top was optional (ruins it IMO), I prefer it just baked with the crust.
I had some with coffee in the morning then went back for some after lunch!
Coffee was also really really good, staff were super friendly putting up with my chat. Overall this place was great and I'd recommend driving the extra couple of K to here from Opononi where the coffee and service at the Cafe was terrible.

The food was excellent; the quiches were both tasty and satisfying. The salad was well-flavored and simply delicious. It is evident that these dishes are prepared with passion. I will certainly return when I am next in this area!

Great stop if you’re headed along the stage highway to Waipoua Forest. We came on a busy day so some of the food options were sold out - but I guess that means they were really good and we should’ve got there earlier! Super lovely people (and dogs) running the place and great coffee.

Funky little place with good music, food, coffee, art and atmosphere. Just up from the wharf. Quality fresh pastries at a reasonable price! Great value all around!
