Burrito House Birkenhead Review | A Comforting Tex-Mex Find on Mokoia Road
First impressions on Mokoia Road
I was driving down Mokoia Road in Birkenhead when something small and cosy caught my eye—no significant signs. No hype. Just a place that looked interesting enough to make me slow down and turn around. That place was Burrito House.
If you know me, you know Tex Mex runs deep in my veins. My family owned Panchos in Milford and Sombreros in Takapuna back in the eighties and early nineties, so this one already had my attention before I even walked in.
Inside the Burrito House
The moment you step inside, you feel it. This place is run by an Indian couple who cook and serve together. A proper dream team with great energy. There is care in how they move, how they talk to customers, and how they handle the food. It feels personal, not rushed, and that always matters to me.
The food breakdown
We started with the basics. Rice and beans. Both were decent, but not quite perfect yet. The rice needed more enchilada sauce to really bring it together, and the beans had a slight Indian spice note. Not a deal breaker, just something that stood out.
Then came the star of the show.
The pulled beef enchiladas were precisely what you want when you are craving comfort food. Rich enchilada sauce, properly melted cheese, soft pulled beef and that warm, filling Tex-Mex feeling. Add the guacamole and sour cream and suddenly everything clicks into place. This is where the kitchen shines.
Portions and value
The portion was massive. Properly filling. At twenty-nine dollars, and by New Zealand standards, that is very fair. You leave full, satisfied, and already thinking about what you would order next time.
Final thoughts
This is one of those places you do not plan to visit. You stumble into it, and it stays in your head after. No gimmicks. No trends. Just honest food, good energy, and a couple who clearly care about what they are doing.
If you are nearby, give Burrito House a try.
Now I need more places to visit, so tell me. What is your favourite spot that I should hit next?
Google Reviews:

The food was very flavoursome and hit all the right spots. Flavoursome, generous amount of meat and cheese. Great portions, so great that we couldn’t finish the nachos and that’s coming from 2 Samoans (lol)
Overall lovely experience.
The owner was also really friendly and provided great, efficient service.
Would definitely come back!
We had lunch yesterday at Burrito House Birkenhead, and it was such a great experience! The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, generous portions, and full of authentic Mexican flavours. We tried the tacos, nachos, burrito, and sides — everything was tasty and beautifully presented.
What I really loved was how kids-friendly the place is. The staff were welcoming and patient, and the relaxed atmosphere made it easy to enjoy our meal while the little ones felt comfortable.
Highly recommend this spot for families or anyone craving good Mexican food in a cosy, welcoming setting!!
