We parked up in Newmarket with no plan, just a wander. No checklist. No destination. Just walking and seeing what caught our eye. That is when we spotted this tiny hole in the wall called Coffee ONDA.
Pastel colours. Super cute. Seats literally placed in a driveway. Blink, and you might miss it. The kind of place you would walk straight past if you were not paying attention.
My wife loves matcha. Especially strawberry matcha. So there was no debate here. One drink. Strawberry matcha. Eight dollars. One cup. I was only there for a sip.
First taste and everything changed.
Smooth. Creamy. Strawberry sweet without tasting fake or syrupy. Then the matcha hit. Soft. Gentle. No bitterness at all.
And listen. I am not a matcha person. I have tried plenty for my wife, and most of the time, I am pulling a face. This one, though? Hands down the best strawberry matcha I have ever had.
The kind I can actually drink happily.
Why Coffee ONDA Is Worth Finding
Coffee ONDA is not flashy. It is small, easy to miss amd feels almost accidental. But that is precisely what makes it special.
If you are in Newmarket, park up and go for a walk. Keep your eyes open. It might take a minute to spot, but once you do, it is absolutely worth it.
Now I want to know. Where is the best strawberry matcha you have ever had anywhere in the world?
This place has the best matcha in Auckland, THE BEST! It's creamy and has just the right amount of bitter:sweet ratio. It's so mind-numblingly good i threw away my coffee machine at a car panel beater as i got in trouble for chucking it in the recycling bin, but that's not the point. The point is, this is the only matcha you will ever need to have in your life, and i say this as a stingy man that laughs at people for buying coffee instead of making their own.. how the tables have turned. I rave about this place to my grandparents as I don't have any friends. But its okay, I don't need friends as this matcha shows me a good time. The staff there are lovely too, which is a rarity in this society. ONDA no. 1!
I know this place is quite famous for its matcha, but I haven’t tried that here. My review is based only on the regular mocha I ordered, especially after seeing the impressive 4.9/5 rating.
Unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations. The mocha was overly sweet and lacked coffee flavour, it tasted more like chocolate milk rather than a proper mocha.
Cute little shop, sad it’s not more of a cafe sit down type of set up BUT I love their matcha. Beautiful flavour of matcha that isn’t clumpy or powdery I prefer mine to be less sweet which was done beautifully but it can be adjusted which is such a plus for sweet tooth’s out there! Service was really nice too and they had some cute little cabinets snacks too. I find the price reasonable for what you get too and it is made pretty fast, perf for an on the go drink weather it’s coffee or matcha etc!
I really like this place -- their matcha is legit. The location is cute & convenient too! (^_^*) Every other matcha place i've been to in AKL (almost every one lol) is nowhere near as good. I usually just make my own matcha/strawberry matcha at home but whenever I'm out i'll always stop by & order a strawberry matcha latte (^_-) they just do it the best!!! Super recommend their cabinet food as it is always great as well~

a great spot for good quality strong matcha with unique flavour twists - the strawberry puree is quite sweet but is well-balanced with the matcha taste, and the salted maple makes for a really creamy subtle earthiness. the workers were so lovely too! 🙂
Best matcha latte I’ve ever had! Okay admittedly I haven’t had that many, but I’ve certainly had a few bad ones and this is anything but. Strawberry is my top pick but mango was also good. Baked goods made on the premises look great too. One of these days I’ll have to try the matcha white chocolate cookie. Plus, the lovely friendly staff always brighten my day 😻
Ever since discovering this place I have to drop by whenever I’m in Newmarket!
Easily some of the best matcha/hojicha in town. Flavours were spot on, it was well blended too. Texture was smooth and quality of matcha/hojicha was high
We ordered: - strawberry matcha - hojicha iced latte
Not really. It is a small hole in the wall style cafe with seating set up in a driveway. Blink and you might walk straight past it. Parking nearby and walking is the best option.
Address: 442D Khyber Pass Road, Newmarket, Auckland 1023, New Zealand
The strawberry matcha is the standout. It is smooth, creamy, lightly sweet and has zero bitterness from the matcha. Even if you are not a matcha person, this one is worth trying.
Seating is very limited and outdoors, set up casually in the driveway. It is more of a grab and enjoy spot rather than somewhere to sit for a long time.
