If you ever find yourself in Bukit Bintang late at night, you will quickly realise that the food scene here never sleeps. Last week, in Kuala Lumpur, after a full day of filming, I thought I was finished. But at midnight, the streets were still alive, and restaurants were open and buzzing. Some even close at four in the morning and reopen at seven, only in KL.
We decided to go to Damascus because the queues are famously long during the day. People wait up to an hour to get a table. Going at midnight was the best decision because there were no queues, but the place was still packed. All three floors were full, which already told me they were doing something very right.
We ordered a beef shawarma, loaded with salad, garlic dip, and pickles. We also added a lamb kofta sandwich with fries and two fresh juices. I went for the mango and my wife chose the strawberry. The moment I tasted the mango juice, I knew it was real mango. Fresh, sweet, and exactly like the Egyptian-style mango juice I grew up with.
The beef shawarma was juicy, tender, and full of flavour. Proper Middle Eastern taste. Dipping it into their garlic sauce takes it to another level entirely. But the surprise was the lamb kofta. It arrived hot and smoky, and honestly, it was even better than the shawarma. My wife said she was not hungry yet, but she admitted she could easily finish another whole sandwich because it was that good.
The total came to 95 ringgit, which is fantastic for Bukit Bintang, especially considering the portions and the quality. This meal would cost much more in Singapore or New Zealand.
If you are in Kuala Lumpur and want authentic Middle Eastern flavours at a great price, Damascus is a must-visit. Whether you come during the day or at midnight, the food delivers.
