A New York Deli Moment in the Heart of Auckland

The moment I walked into Federal Delicatessen on Federal Street, directly opposite SkyCity, I genuinely forgot I was in Auckland. The noise. The energy. The accents. Tourists everywhere. American voices bouncing around the room. It felt exactly like the New York delis I only ever saw on TV food shows growing up.

This place has presence. It is loud in the best way. Busy without being chaotic. A proper deli atmosphere where you feel like food is taken seriously but never pretentiously.

The Reuben Experience

We shared one Reuben on rye. Twenty-six dollars fifty. And honestly, the second it landed on the table, the pastrami was already calling my name. This was a very private, happy moment.

I have eaten a lot of Reubens in my life. A lot. But this one is different. This is the benchmark.

The sauerkraut is balanced and not overpowering. The Russian dressing is rich but controlled. The pastrami is smoked beautifully and melts in your mouth. Nothing is fighting for attention. Everything works together precisely as it should.

Now I finally understand what people mean when they say that sitting in a New York deli, eating a Reuben, is an experience. This is it. Right here in Auckland.

The Vibe

Federal Delicatessen does not try to be quiet or refined. It leans into its identity fully. Loud conversations. Fast-moving staff. Tables are turning over constantly. It feels alive.

You do not come here for a slow romantic meal. You come here to eat appropriately and leave satisfied.

What to Expect

Big portions
Classic American Jewish deli comfort food
A busy atmosphere, especially during peak hours
Walk-in dining with high turnover
Strong focus on sandwiches and nostalgic dishes

Price vs Experience

At twenty-six fifty for the Reuben, some might hesitate. But once you take the first bite, it makes sense. This is not just a sandwich. It is technique, balance, and experience on a plate.

Would I eat this every day if I could? Absolutely.

Final Thoughts

Federal Delicatessen is not just hype. It earns its reputation. If you love pastrami, Reubens, or classic American deli food, this is essential eating in Auckland.

Now tell me honestly.
Is this the best Reuben in Auckland
Or do you know one that can beat it

We visited The Fed at 1 pm for lunch, just the two of us, and had a great experience. You order and pay through a QR code, which was super easy, and the food came out really fast. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed lunch in Auckland.

The highlights for us were definitely the pastrami sandwich and the chicken sandwich — both delicious, generous, and packed with flavor. Everything felt fresh and well-prepared.

Overall, a really solid spot for tasty food and quick service. We’d happily come back.

Such an unexpected delight in the middle of Auckland. Great food, super friendly staff. Booths are a little small for a group of 4 but the charm makes up for it.

Phenomena vibe, the atmosphere is so well done. The portions are kept pretty small, not often I have enouth room for dessert but I'm glad I did, because that cherry pie was delicious. My steak was a bit over but still juicy, the chicken skin on top was an interesting touch. I will be back for sure to try the more American dishes and more pies.

We came and had lunch as part of the “restaurant month” specials. We had the pastrami and PB cookies with ice cream. Also ordered a poutine as we were starving. The vibe is very chill and we sat in the higher chairs in the middle aisle. Our waiter was very hospitable and made us feel very comfortable. Would highly recommend to others, although the number of patrons was already telling on how popular this place is. Thank you for a great time.

I recently ate at this fantastic American-style diner, and the experience was great! The atmosphere perfectly captures that classic diner vibe, complete with cozy booths and retro décor. It felt like stepping into another world when you walk in.

The chicken sandwich with gravy….Absolutely delicious! The chicken was perfectly cooked and the chicken skin added extra flavour and a crispiness to the sandwich. The rich, flavorful gravy poured over it took the dish to another level. It’s comfort food at its finest, and I can’t recommend it enough.

We also had the lemon meringue pie and it was the type of pie that the more you ate it the better it got. Nice tart flavour!

The staff were very friendly and attentive. I recommend this place!
