Some places do not need hype. They survive because they have history, loyal customers, and a menu that has stayed true to itself for decades. Mexican Cafe is one of those places.
Established in 1983, this is one of Auckland’s oldest Mexican restaurants and a spot many locals grew up eating at. No trends. No reinvention. Just classic comfort food that has stayed largely the same for over forty years.
I also filmed a full vlog of this visit, which is now up on my TikTok for those who want to see the food and atmosphere in real time.
Auckland’s Old School Mexican Institution
Walking into the Mexican Cafe feels like stepping back in time. The room is always buzzing, the menu looks familiar, and the crowd is a mix of long-time regulars, families, and curious first-timers. This is not modern Mexican, and it does not pretend to be.
That is precisely why it works.
There is something comforting about a place that knows who it is and sticks to it, even when food trends come and go.
A Restaurant Built on History, Not Hype
Mexican Cafe has been serving Aucklanders since 1983, long before Mexican food became mainstream here. Many people you speak to will tell you stories of coming here as kids, as students, or on special occasions.
This is a nostalgia-driven restaurant, and that nostalgia is part of the experience.
What We Ordered at Mexican Cafe
We kept it simple and very classic.
One cheese dip
One shredded beef nachos
Two cans of Coke Zero
The total came to fifty-six dollars.
No cocktails, no extras, no sides. Just the staples that this place is known for.
Cheese Dip, Comfort Food at Its Best
The cheese dip was exactly what you expect from Mexican Cafe.
Warm, creamy, salty, and very moreish. The kind of dip you keep scooping without even thinking about it. Paired with crunchy corn chips, it does its job perfectly.
This is not a reinvented queso or a fancy cheese blend. It is old school, familiar, and comforting.
Shredded Beef Nachos, Hearty and Generous
The shredded beef nachos came out as a generous plate, perfect for sharing.
The beef was soft, well-seasoned, and spread properly across the nachos, so every bite had something going on. Loads of cheese, a good balance of toppings, and very filling.
This is not light food. This is sit back, take your time, and enjoy kind of food.
Drinks, Simple and Familiar
We went with two cans of Coke Zero.
Nothing special, but sometimes that is precisely what you want with this kind of meal. It fits the old school vibe perfectly.
Prices, Value, and the Experience
Is it cheap? Not really.
Fifty-six dollars for shared plates and soft drinks will raise some eyebrows. But you are not just paying for the food. You are paying for the experience, the history, and the fact that this place has been part of Auckland’s food scene for over forty years.
For many people, that matters.
Is Mexican Cafe Worth Visiting Today?
If you are looking for modern Mexican flavours, creative plating, or trendy twists, this might not be the place for you.
But if you want consistency, nostalgia, and comfort food that tastes exactly the way people remember it, Mexican Cafe delivers.
It knows its lane and stays in it confidently.
Mexican Cafe, Memories or Modern Mexican Flavours?
Mexican Cafe is not trying to impress you. It is not chasing trends. It is here to give you familiar flavours, generous portions, and a sense of history.
So tell me honestly.
Are you going to Mexican Cafe for the memories…
Or for modern Mexican flavours?
Google Reviews:
The service was friendly but average.
The food was not good. The quesadilla was two soft shell tacos. The fried chicken was essentially burnt batter with virtually no chicken inside. The burritos and the nachos were ok. The one taco ordered was still frozen inside.
The classic margaritas turned out to be exactly the same as the slushy style you get in bad bars. Not classic at all.
This restaurant has been an Auckland icon for year. Such a shame to see it decline so badly.
I have been desperate for my comfort food for ages and here, it was perfect. The pulled beef was delicious and done with love, the chicken was crisp and moist- don’t miss this little hidden gem.
To start with the positives, the ambiance was awesome! The music was authentically Mexican mixing Mexican regional classics with modern music and sprinkling other popular Latin songs. The decor gave the feel of a typical Mexican restaurant with pictures and flags. The location was great with good views of the Sky Tower. The service was great as everyone was very responsive to our needs and pleasant.
Here comes the more critical part. The chips and salsa came standard, and both were tasty as they usually tend to be anywhere. To start, we ordered a Margarita with a taco, the Margarita itself tasted fine, but my friend (also Mexican) and I were completely caught off guard when we tasted what was pure sugar instead of salt on the rim. Next, the taco. We tried to keep an open mind, considering it had lettuce (not a common thing in Mexico), but the chicken was shredded (chicken meat is usually grilled for a taco), cold, and with zero flavor. We added as much hot sauce as we could to add some flavor, but it didn't improve the taste all that much. Frankly, it was hard to finish.
When the main course arrived (we both opted for the pork al pastor chimichanga). The presentation was fine, and I appreciated the red, white and green detail of the salsa, sour cream and guac on the chimichanga top. After mixing in the toppings and taking that first bite, it was another unfortunate disappointment. The pork al pastor did not taste like it should at all. It tasted more like American pulled pork BBQ (sweet, rather than salty), which al pastor is also grilled and salty not sweet. It was not edible for my taste. The beans were also fine (tasted like they came from a can) and the rice was undercooked (still hard).
I know it can be challenging to run a restaurant that is not typical to the area and you have to work with the ingredients you have available, but this was just not good food. The tortillas tasted authentic and the chips and salsa were of great quality. I think if the restaurant simply changed the recipe to grilled meats rather than whatever method they use for cooking these shredded meats, it would improve the flavor TEN-FOLD. Simple seasoning like just adding salt to these meats would also vastly improve the flavor. You can keep the lettuce on the taco just please grill the meat and season it better. For the margarita, perhaps sugar is a preferred flavor locally, but maybe ask the customer which they prefer.
I would not return to this restaurant as is, unless they changed their recipes. I do believe it has the potential to be a very successful Mexican restaurant in the southern-most part of the GLOBE!
On top of the wonderful atmosphere, the food was incredibly delicious. Every dish was full of flavor and absolutely satisfying — the kind of food that makes you want to come back again. A place that leaves you feeling happy, full, and wanting more.
Note that the restaurant is at the top of a fairly narrow stairwell, I don't think it's accessible for individuals with reduced mobility.
