January first. Public holiday. Auckland was basically asleep. Everything closed. Doors locked. Hunger rising.
So we did the only logical thing. Mall run. Newmarket. Two double seven.
Scrolling the directory and boom. Oodles Uyghur Chinese Halal Restaurant.
What is Uyghur food?
Quick context before we eat. Uyghurs are a Muslim Turkic people from Central Asia, best known for bold flavours, charcoal grills, hand-pulled noodles and dumplings.
And yes, they are also Chinese. This is halal Chinese food with profound depth and spice.
What did we order?
First sip—traditional Uyghur milk tea. Sweet. Comforting. Nothing wild, but very easy to drink, and a nice start.
Then the skewers hit the table. Beef skewers had good flavour but were a little dry. Mental note for next time. Lamb. Fat is your friend.
And then the star arrived. Xinjiang stir-fried beef noodles. Smoky. Spicy. Deep flavours. Properly addictive.
One bite and suddenly every closed restaurant from earlier disappeared.
Beef dumplings came in hot. Dip them in chilli and vinegar, and wow. That combo does not miss.
Price and verdict:
The total damage was seventy-five dollars, including the 15% public holiday surcharge. Worth it for the noodles alone.
This is one of those meals that saves the day when everything else is shut down. Big flavours. Proper halal options. And food that actually satisfies.
Next visit is already decided. Lamb skewers. No hesitation.
So tell me. Beef or lamb. What are you picking?

Great Halal Chinese food

The beef skerwers were a little dry but the noodles and dumplings were great. The Noodles was the star of the show!
This place has been on my list for a long time. We were surprised at how beautiful the interior was. The staff were polite and no issues. You order at the counter. The portin size is incredible. We ordered 2 dishes and that was plenty for us. I would like to try their other dishes too. It has an open plan kitchen which is pretty cool too.
We queued for more than 20 mins on a Friday night at 6.30pm. It takes a while for people to order their food and they will then allocate a table to you. We ordered the Signature Original Flavour Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, Beef Dumplings, Stir Fried Noodles and Jumbo Lamb Skewers. Big portions and the food came out fast once you get table
You have to line up and order food and pay. Takes forever for people to actually order as they’re ordering lots of skewers. Might be better if they have a QR code system as we waited in line for a while. The skewers came out super quick, within 5 minutes of ordering and they’re great. Bread was quite dry though. Then the noodles took another 40 minutes to arrive, despite that those were the only two dishes we ordered. The noodles were delicious but weirdly all cut up? So it was super difficult to eat and definitely not what we expected. And then there was a super burnt piece of food, we thought it was mushroom at first but it was definitely a burnt piece of food (?) from the wok or something. I don’t think I’d come here again, not a restaurant experience. More like a really unorganised foodcourt. If you want to try it, go to the Albany Oodles.
Finally got to try this popular New Market restaurant. It's as busy as they say – we lined up at lunch!
The slow-braised beef noodle was the highlight for me. The soup was full of flavour and the noodles were perfectly bouncy. It tasted really authentic, just like what I had in China.
We also tried the new cold rice noodle, which was unique and refreshing with a nice sour and spicy balance. The stir-fried beef on rice was a huge portion with a great sauce, and the lamb skewers were delicious (eat them while they're warm!).
"Oodles of noodles and soup .... this halal noodles outlet was a gem in new market. When we got there, the place was jam packed and we had to queue to get in. You have to order first and pay before you can enter. Once the food arrived, we understand now why there's a crowd, the portions were huge and the noodle broth was rich and so aromatic. We also added the BBQ lamb and it was such a nice complement to the noodles. Well worth the long queue!
Oodles Uyghur Chinese Halal Restaurant is located inside Westfield Newmarket at 277 Broadway, Newmarket, Auckland. It is an easy option when most standalone restaurants are closed, especially on public holidays.
They specialise in Uyghur cuisine which blends Central Asian and Chinese influences. Expect charcoal skewers, hand pulled style noodles, dumplings and bold spices.
Yes. There are vegetarian friendly dishes available, including noodle and vegetable based options. It is best to confirm ingredients with staff when ordering.
Some dishes are mildly spiced while others have deeper heat, especially the Xinjiang style stir fried noodles. You can usually request chilli on the side.
The Xinjiang stir-fried beef noodles are a standout. Dumplings with chilli and vinegar are highly recommended. For skewers, lamb is the better choice for juiciness.
Absolutely. Being inside Westfield Newmarket makes it a reliable option on public holidays when Auckland feels completely shut down.
