4.9 Star Sandwich Shop in Auckland: Worth the Hype?
If you ever needed proof that you do not need fancy interiors to build a loyal following, The Sandwichery is it.
This tiny sandwich shop in Birkenhead has a massive 4.9-star Google rating, and after eating here, it makes complete sense. The space is cosy and straightforward, husband and wife run, no distractions, no overthinking the decor. The food is the main character here, and it knows it.
First Impressions
Walking in, the vibe is relaxed and welcoming. You can tell this is a place built around people and conversation, not trends. It feels local in the best possible way.
We decided to share one Reuben, priced at 20.50. Before the food even arrived, there was already a win. No card surcharge when tapping. Instant respect.
The Fries Deserve Their Own Moment
Then the fries landed.
Double-fried. Golden. Crunchy. Finished with rock salt and dried parsley.
These are dangerous fries. The kind you keep reaching for even when you tell yourself you are full. Crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, properly seasoned, and clearly done with care. If you come here and do not order fries, that is on you.
The Reuben Sandwich
Now the main event.
The bread was spot on, soft but sturdy enough to hold everything together. The smoked meat actually tasted smoked, which sounds obvious but is surprisingly rare.
And then the twist.
Instead of sauerkraut, they use pickled cabbage.
I will be honest, I was unsure. But one bite in, I got it. The cabbage brought freshness and balance without overpowering the meat. It worked beautifully and gave the sandwich its own identity rather than copying a classic blindly.
The Story Behind the Shop
Here is the part that makes this place even better.
The couple behind The Sandwichery previously ran an Indian restaurant just down the road. They took a two-year break, but realised they missed the human connection, the daily chats, the regulars, the community.
So they came back, stronger and clearer on what they wanted to do.
The husband is an ex-InterContinental chef, and you genuinely feel that experience in every bite. Nothing feels rushed or sloppy. Everything feels intentional.
Final Thoughts
The Sandwichery is still very new, but it already feels established. There are loads of options on the menu, the quality is consistent, and the passion is evident.
This is the kind of place you support not because it is trendy, but because it is good.
I am already planning my next visit.
Now tell me.
Reuben first… or straight for those fries?

They even gave my baby some good quality cheese and cucumber to nibble on 💗
I wish had pictures of the salad ate it too fast.
Would go back again and again 💃🏻💃🏻
We went on the Xmas parade day, and the girls there were very nice and friendly. Very good service. The look of the place doesn’t say much, but this isn’t important when you want good food and service. Will See you again!
The fries were exceptional—crispy on the outside, soft inside, and seasoned just right. Easily some of the best fries I’ve had in a long time.
Overall, The Sandwichery delivered a delicious, satisfying meal that felt crafted with care. If you’re craving a proper Reuben or just want a great lunch, this spot is absolutely worth it.
Ps, this is the second time I've ordered the reuben and its allways on point.
The sandwiches are not bad, but a few details could be better. The falafel sandwich missed the mark: falafel should be crispy outside and soft inside, yet ours was just a soft mash with the taste of falafel. The Reuben sandwich was decent in flavour, though it came with far less beef than shown in the photos from other reviews.
Overall, a pleasant enough spot with potential, but it could use a bit more attention to texture and presentation to truly stand out.
